[ Questions ]

What is HR of One?
HR of One (hrofone.ai) is run by Utlyze for the one person who runs HR at a small or mid-size employer. It covers using AI in people operations with a person accountable for every people decision.
What is an HR department of one?
An organization where one person handles all of HR, often alongside other duties. SHRM offers an HR Department of One specialty credential; HR of One is not affiliated with SHRM.
Are there laws on AI in hiring?
In some places. New York City’s Local Law 144 requires a bias audit within one year of using an automated employment decision tool, a public summary of the audit, and notice to employees or job candidates. The Department of Consumer and Worker Protection said enforcement would begin July 5, 2023. (NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, “Automated Employment Decision Tools (AEDT)”; source: https://www.nyc.gov/site/dca/about/automated-employment-decision-tools.page) Rules vary by state and city, so check with counsel where you hire.
What is California’s No Robo Bosses Act?
SB 947, on automated decision systems in employment, passed the legislature in 2026 and awaits the governor’s action, which is due by September 30, 2026. As reported by Mintz, employers could not rely only on an automated system to discipline or fire someone. If an employer relied primarily on that system, a person would have to corroborate the decision and the worker would get written notice. If signed, the bill becomes operative July 1, 2027. This is a summary, not legal advice.
Can AI write job descriptions?
It can draft them. A person should check the duties for accuracy, add any disclosures your state requires, such as pay ranges where they apply, and read for biased or exclusionary language.
Do we need an employee AI use policy?
If staff use AI at work, a written policy helps: which tools are approved, what data must never go into them, and when AI use has to be disclosed. Have counsel review it before you publish.
Should an AI agent answer employee HR questions?
Routine, documented questions, such as where to find a form or what the holiday schedule is, suit an agent. Complaints, accommodations, leave, pay disputes and anything about discipline belong with a person.
What do Consult and Build cost?
Consult: $400 an hour, sold in 5-hour blocks ($2,000 per block). Build: $15,000 a month. Each month, pick up to 5 business processes for our build-with-you coaches to work on. They build your AI systems with you and teach your team to run them. If you ever leave, the systems stay with you. Agents work only on your HR systems, and a shared 24/7 on-call rotation answers, with response times in writing.
How is this different from Business of One?
HR of One covers people operations and the employment rules around AI. Business of One covers running an AI-first business. Utlyze runs both, and the two Consult and Build offers are identical.
Is this legal or HR advice?
No. Everything here about employment law, hiring, termination and benefits is general education. It promises no compliance outcome, and an employment lawyer who knows your workforce should confirm any decision.
